SWK 311 Social Welfare Policy (3cr.)
This is the first of a two-term sequence. This course aims to help students understand what drives social welfare policy, its impact on lives, how it can be changed, and how social workers can effectively advocate for their clients. This course is designed to develop policy analysis skills, enabling students to identify gaps in the service delivery system and inequities or oppressions in current policy implementation. The course also develops policy and practice skills, allowing the students to work toward social change aligned with social work ethics and the profession's commitment to social and economic justice. Prerequisite: SWK 255;
SWK 380 Social Discrimination (3cr.)
This course examines the identification and etiology of institutional and individual prejudice, stereotypes, racism, and discrimination, and their impact on recipients. The inquiry primarily uses a social justice model incorporating social work values and practice. Emphasis is placed on the difficulties faced by racial and ethnic minority populations, as well as women, youth, the aged, and LGBT populations.
HIS 410 Criminal Justice in Historical Perspective (3cr.)
Examining the history of crime and criminal justice in the context of changing attitudes and views about law over time. While the course's primary focus is the United States, comparative developments in other countries are also covered.
